In a time honored tradition Columbus Rotary celebrated it’s “Changing of the Guard” on June 26, 2015.  The traditional gavel exchange took place between now Past President CK Satyapriya and President Tricia Strahler with numerous guests, family members, Rotary VIP’s and Rotarians on hand.
Dr. Steve Sundre started the proceedings with a thoughtful invocation.   President CK took the podium and thanked out going Board members Chip Chapman, Mike Kehoe and Rich Ramsey for their time and service.  CK then introducing the incoming officers and Board members for the coming year: President Tricia Strahler, President Elect Jack Graf, Vice President Paul Blevins, Treasurer Roy Lydic, Secretary Scott Brown and Directors Dana Charlton, Deana Gordon, Galen Graham, Bob Lash, John O’Meara, Mike Rankin, Calloway Robertson, John Stewart and David Zid.  CK also thanked all committee chairs and the 27 new members that joined under his tenure.
He ended his presidency by highlighting new membership categories that were developed to ease access to younger members as well as an “E” category for those who cannot attend on Monday’s.  Further CK mentioned the use of Touchpoints which allow one to more accurately measure ones participation in the Club.  With his remarks concluded CK turned over the gavel and Presidents pin to Tricia Strahler.  Trisha thanked CK for his service and introduced all Past Presidents in attendance.
President Trisha started her remarks with some history; her history really and how she ended up in Columbus Rotary almost nine years ago.  She pointed out three important individuals who shaped her personal life and professional career.  To these three she bestowed Paul Harris Fellowships; Dr. Robert Richmond, Carol Ellies Moorehead and Stephen Gunder.   Tricia also recognized her family who play an important role in her life and many who were on hand at the meeting.  Lastly, she recognized the first Columbus Rotarians that she met and worked with on an event for then District Governor Luke McCormick.  These individuals are Jim Bartha, Jerry Converse, Jim King, Steve Sundre and Hugo Trux.
As we approach the new Rotary year, starting July 1, each Rotarian is encouraged to join a Club committee.  Watch for a committee brochure to tell you about each group and contact information for their leadership.  A hand out sheet will be available over the next several weeks to sign up for these committees to help you to pursue your interests.  Sign up sheets can be turned in on Monday's or to the office.

We have another Young Professional coming this summer.  If you will recall last summer we had a young engineer visit during the summer; pictured here.
Our new visitor is Mariona who is from Spain.  She is interested in Biology and Genetics. She will be with our club from July 7-18. We are looking for host families who would like to show her around Columbus and we also are looking for opportunities to observe in her field of interest.

Please contact Kathy Gatterdam for more information.

Nigeria and the whole continent of Africa is on the cusp of being polio free, Dr. Hamid Jafari told audience members at the Rotary Convention on 8 June in São Paulo, Brazil.

Between 2013 and 2014, the reported cases of polio dropped from 53 to just six in Nigeria. Even more encouraging, said Jafari, is that the last case of polio in Nigeria was reported in July of last year and the last case in all of Africa was reported in Somalia in August.

“With a year of no polio cases in Nigeria tantalizingly close, and no cases in Somalia since August, the tireless work of so many people across the continent is paying off,” said Jafari, director of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative for the World Health Organization. “But it is incredibly important that Nigeria remains vigilant. As long as polio exists anywhere, it will continue to be a threat everywhere.”

in helping at a lunch meeting we are always in need of those willing to check in members/guests, announce visitors and guests and provide invocations.  Contact Scott at the office if you'd like to help!
