High School Community Service Planning Meeting. 8:30-10:00a.m. Linmoor Education Center. 
  • A group of students and faculty from each high school participates in this project planning workshop led by an experienced strategic planner with a background in public education

Create and launch student community service projects.

Implementation of Community Service Projects.
  • Ongoing coordination among students, teachers/project advisors, principals, Program Coordinator, and community resources.
  • Capture key project events in photos and videos.
  • Students and advisors review requirements for Applications 1 & 2 and prepare to meet the submission deadlines.
  • Students wrap up their projects, finalize project display boards, and prepare for presenting projects during the Review/Reinforcement/Selection process.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS INFORMATION
Through participation in community service projects, hundreds of Columbus high school students experience the value of service for others and themselves. In addition, diving into service/project-based activities stimulates interest in their academic work. The goal is for students to apply the value of service and leadership skills throughout their lives. 
 
Projects
 
  • May be conducted by student teams or an individual student.
  • Must be conducted with the official oversight of one or more of the following: Career & Community Resource Coordinator, school administrator, teacher, school counselor, school club advisor.
 
Elements of a solid, high quality community service project
 
Student Ownership
 
Student created and led as much as possible.
Student Involvement
 
High quality involvement by as many students as possible given the nature of the project. 
Problem/Issue Relevance
 
Problem/issue is serious and important to the people served by the project.
Student Knowledge/
Understanding
 
Students demonstrate knowledge of the problem/issue and an understanding of how the issue affects the people served.
Partnership/
Collaboration
 
Students explore the possibility of working with one or more community organizations to maximize the impact of their service and increase their knowledge and skills.
Service Learning
If possible, the project connects with one or more teachers and academic areas to inform student work and motivate classroom engagement and learning.
 
Contact With Service Recipients
 
If possible, students have direct contact with the people served by their project.
Impact/Results
 
Immediate, strong impact on the people served and the potential for impact that lasts over time.

Ideally submitted by students with answers that are clearly responsive and show strong attention to the elements of a solid, high quality community service project.

REQUIRED STUDENT PROJECT APPLICATION PART 1 – THE PROJECT PREVIEW
Online Submission Due by 3 PM, December 13, 2017

NOTE: immediately upon submitting Application Part 1, the submitter and the Program Coordinator will receive emails with a copy of the completed Application. Please keep this for future reference.
 
Instructions
We encourage one or several students to complete this application with a review by the project advisor before submission. Use this submission as one of many ways to practice business-like thinking and writing skills.
 
  • Complete a separate application for each community service project.
  • Answer the questions with sufficient information for the Coordinator and Rotary Reviewers to understand your project at this stage of its operations. This information may result in the Coordinator suggesting resources that could be useful to help meet project goals.
  • In preparing Application Part 1, check out the information about Application Part 2 so you can see what you will need to complete by April 23, 2018.
  • You will distribute copies of your Project Application Part 1 to the Rotary Review team members who visit your school.
  • You may include support materials for Application Part 1. Examples include: photos and videos of the project in action, descriptions of the group(s) served, testimonial letters. Submit these materials to the Program Coordinator.
 
Application Part 1- Project Preview
1. School name.
2. Project name.
3. Name, title, phone and e-mail of the project advisor.
4. Type of project. Select one or more of these descriptions:
          (A) Conducted by an individual student. If so, provide name and grade level.
          (B) Group of students. If so, list names and grade levels of team leaders and each
               of their main responsibilities.
          (C) Related to a specific high school course. If so, provide the name, phone and e      
                mail for the teacher(s) and course(s) connected to the project.
          (D) Associated with a school organization. If so, provide the name of the organization
                and the name and email of the faculty advisor.
           (E) Conducted in partnership with one or more non-school organizations. If so,
                 provide the name of the organization and the contact information for the person
                 at the organization working most closely with the students.
5. Project Focus. What issue(s)/problem(s)/need(s) are you addressing with this project? Write a           brief statement about why this focus was chosen.
6. Top 3 project goals.
7. The main activities you are doing to achieve each goal.
8. The biggest challenges you anticipate you must overcome to meet your goals.

The Executive Summary is a professional way to provide essential information to everyone interested in your project. We encourage one or several students to complete this application with a review by the project advisor before submission. This is one of many ways students can practice business-like thinking and writing skills.
 
By the time you get to this point you have done lots of work to meet your goals, served a worthy cause or causes, learned valuable lessons, and created memories that will last a lifetime. You should be proud of your efforts.

  • Because this is a summary, you will have a limited number of words to use in describing your project. It is a valuable skill to concisely communicate important information.
  • You may include materials to support your Application Part 2. Examples include: photos and videos of the project in action, descriptions of the group(s) served, testimonial letters. Submit these materials to the Program Coordinator.
