ROTARIANS AND FAMILIES

The following members and their families need your cares, concerns and prayers.
Rotarian Jim Tornes called the office this week to report on his absence.  Jim suffered a stroke on January 17.  He reports that "recovery is going good".  In his usual way he kept the matter quiet, so that folks didn't feel obligated to reach out to him.  When Jim is ready to start attending lunch he could use a ride if you are able.  Call Scott to help.  He is still using a wheelchair/walker as needed and loading into a car can be a challenge.

Former Rotarian Dick Helland passed away last week.  Rather than an obit we felt that this message from a friend was appropriate.
Yesterday afternoon Dick Helland departed this life, leaving the body that was too tired to go on. The pneumonia he contracted took such a toll on his lungs that no manner of medical combat could take it down. Dick knew he did not want a life filled with machines to keep him going. He rallied for a last beautiful night with all of his children. When Julie walked in the room he beamed and said, “There she is” with the loving look we had seen from him so many times in their 36 years of marriage. He was visited by several special friends and said his goodbyes. He was peaceful. He looked as handsome as ever and had a smile on his face. He ate chocolate ice cream. He even asked that we “take a selfie” - a comical request from a man whose cell phone disappeared six months ago, drowned in a sea of papers at the bottom of a box.:) He made sure everyone would take care of Julie and the house. And when he knew all that he loved would be ok, he moved on. He was a loving husband and father, a one-man clipping service, a steward of God, a master gardener, a great debater, and a beloved friend. We will all miss him dearly. We have set calling hours for March 24, 4-6 pm at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Road. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on March 25 at 11 am at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Road. The obituary will be in the Columbus Dispatch this Sunday.

You are urged to reach out to these members individually if you choose.  Their contact information can be found online or on our app.
If you are aware of news that should be shared here please contact the club office.

WATER WELL PROJECT in ETHIOPIA

A few facts: As you may know, Rotarian Mimi Tadesse has been the leader of the Water Well project in Ethiopia that you may have heard about. She is from Ethiopia, and her organization helps impoverished women in an area there called Oromia. This project involves drilling 3 water wells which will serve approximately 1000 people. The cost of the project is approximately $45K. We have donations from private donors, and other Rotary Clubs but the majority of the money will come from a Global Grant that our District has submitted to Rotary International. We are hopeful that it will be approved very soon!

DISTRICT ASSEMBLY - BEYOND OUR CLUB

We often hear about Rotary activities and events outside of our own club.  Columbus Rotary is just one of 59 fellow Rotary clubs in SE Ohio District 6690.  Each spring the District hoists a meeting called "District Assembly".   This is an excellent way for newer Rotarians to engage in club and district activities furthering their understanding of Rotary.
