"The Circus; a history and some stories"
Rotarian Fred D. Pfening

Fred's father, former Rotarian Fred Pfening, II, owned a circus when Fred was a child, thus he has been around circuses and circus professionals all his life.  Fred's first article on circus history was published in 1965.  He has written over fifty essays since.  The articles and essays have appeared in Bandwagon, the journal of the Circus Historical Society; The Missouri Historical Review; and The Wisconsin Magazine of History .

Fred has served as Managing editor, Bandwagon, 1993-Present; President, Circus Historical Society, 1986-1989; has been a peer reviewer of circus books published by the University of Illinois Press and Columbia University Press; participated in numerous television documentaries; expert commentator on Fox and later on PBS for the Great Circus Parade in Milwaukee, 1985-2009; member, Board of Directors, Circus World Museum, Baraboo, Wisconsin, 1984-2003, 2008- Present; Board President, 1989-1991.  Additionally along with his father, Fred built a large collection of circus

COLERAIN ELEMENTARY ELVES NEEDED
ImageCalling all elves!
Santa is warming up his sleigh and we need elves to help unwrap gifts. Join us for the 95th year as Columbus Rotarians celebrate Christmas and the holidays with our friends from the Columbus City Schools. Colerain Elementary School integrates students with orthopedic disabilities and health impairments with the general education population.  Rotarians are on hand to help unwrap and assemble gifts provided for every student at the school.

Colerain Christmas Party is Dec. 18, at 8:30 a.m.
The school is located at 499 E. Weisheimer between High and Indianola, south of Morse.

This event is open to Rotarians, their friends and family.  In fact it is one of the largest service events each year.

ZOO PICS?
What happens when 170 Rotarians, family and friends gather at the Zoo for the third year in a row?  1) A lot of fun & fellowship. 2) A lot of pictures.  Send in your pics of this fantastic event for the annuals of time.

Thanks to the Fun & Fellowship Committee (Damron, Graf, Kun, Robertson) for putting together a great evening for the family of Rotary.  Thanks also to our Rotary Santa (Smitty) who will pull double duty this week when he helps out at Colerain Elementary.

ROTARIANS AND FAMILIES

The following members and their families need your cares, concerns and prayers.

Rotarian Jane Miller has been in a lot of pain ever since she fell on the way into Rotary about three weeks ago; it definitely exacerbated her recovery from two knee replacements.

Additionally, her 7 week old grandson is going to be having open heart surgery in the near future.

Rotarian John Stegman passed away Monday, December 14 at home.  Additional details are currently not avaiable.  Services are being planned for January.

PARTING SHOT
Pat and Ray Bostic, Teddy Damron, Scott Brown and Principal Berridge after the wrapping at Colerain.  The Club has served this community for 95 years and counting!
