OUR NEXT MEETING
"District 6690 Group Study Exchange Team "
  August 1, 2016

Members of the District GSE Team

The 2016 Group Study Exchange Team will discuss their May 2016 trip to District 4620 located in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.  There was a total of 6 team members that participated in the program which involved dozens of cultural and vocational events across the District of 4620.  This program is a revival of the discontinued Rotary International GSE program and was directly funded by 8 clubs within District 6690.  The team is excited to share their experiences and promote the continued support for this program.

BACKPACKS FOR FOSTER CHILDREN
UPDATE! - New Member Amanda Bowen introduced a new Community Service initiative; Backpacks for Foster Children recently at Rotary.  Typically children in the foster program are given trash bags as they move throughout the system.  As you can imagine, their self worth is associated with these trash bags.

Over the next several weeks the club will be collecting NEW student backpacks and small suitcases to distribute to youth in the Franklin County area through a partnership with Franklin County Children's Services.  FCCS serves over 3,800 youth in foster care. Drop off your backpacks at a Monday meeting or at the office.

Our goal is to collect 100 backpacks and to date have 60 in hand with cash for more!  For more information contact Amanda at bowenae@yahoo.com.

IT'S TIME TO VOLUNTEER

Thanks to all whom have taken the opportunity to volunteer to assist at a Monday meeting.  Please look over the upcoming vacancies if you would like to help us out.  If you choose not to, or can't, no worries.

New member Evan DuBro introduced the office to Sign Up Genius, which has greatly assisted in this process.

WOMENS EMPOWERMENT MISSION TRIP

Annual CGWE Mission Trip
Be the change that you want to see in this world
Don’t just travel the world, change it!

Join us on a journey you will never forget. We invite you to meet the women of Oromia, Ethopia, and experience God’s love as it pours out of them, despite the desperately poor conditions they live in.
On our trip, we will:

  • visit CGWE beneficiaries;
  • celebrate the circle of life and giving, and the tradition of dabaree, as the first-born calf from each GCWE-gifted cow is given to a woman on CGWE’s waiting list;
  •  distribute donated clothes and eyeglasses;
  • provide personal hygiene training and basic items such as soap, combs and washcloths;
  • encourage the tradition of teamwork (dabo) so that the beneficiaries can help each other as needed; and
  • educate and train about harmful traditional practices and other forms of violence against women and girls, such as female genital mutilation.

Trip Date: Mid-March, tentatively scheduled for March 7 – 19,   2017
Total cost: $2,500 per person.
Travel immunizations and malaria medications are needed for your trip. To apply for CGWE’s short-term mission trip, contact Dureti (Mimi) Tadesse atcgweafrica@gmail.com or (614) 441-1020.

The first trip informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 9th at7:00pm.

LUNCH FEE INCREASES

During its April meeting, the Board of Directors voted on increases to lunch pricing which will take effect for our new Rotary year, July 1, 2016 and is reflected in your recent invoice.

It has been five years since lunch prices were increased, and of course over that time, costs have gone up. Under our current contract with the Boat House, lunch fees increase 5% each year.  Since September of 2015, the Club has absorbed a slight loss on lunches, charging our members less per meal than what we are paying.  We are sure you understand this is not a sustainable policy.

Those of you who choose to pre-pay lunch, will see only a minor increase of $12.50 per half – or 50 cents a meal.  At that rate, the Club is still slightly subsidizing the per meal cost.  But we feel it is important to offer this incentive, as it provides us with fiscal predictability and stability, making it easier for us to project and manage operational expenses.

The lunch upgrade fee at the door, for those choosing not to pre-pay, will increase to $12.00 starting with our July 11th meeting.

PARTING SHOT
President Jack Graf and his tie. (July 25, 2016)

Thanks to all Columbus Rotarians for participating in our scientific necktie survey during the past several weeks. Both video surveillance and a special cell phone app underwritten by Luke McCormick were used to tally the actual numbers wearing ties to our meetings. By disqualifying both Paul Blevins and Calloway Robertson from the count because they are officers; the results are clear. In a cutting of President Jack’s tie ceremony on Monday-  The Carl Faehnle necktie rule has been adopted ---ties are no longer derigeur at our meetings.
